T h ree important global trends will affect older persons living in cities. Fi r s t , the world’s population is increasingly concentrated in urban areas. The United Nations estimates that over 60% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2025. Second, poverty is becoming more concentrated in urban areas around the world. Third, for the most part people are living longer, and this has contributed to an increase in the number of older people around the world. Given these trends, it is critical to have a better understanding of the situation of older people in cities and their unique needs. As a result, the International Longevity Center (ILC) has launched an initiative to examine the impact of population aging and longevity in four world cities—New Yo rk City, Lon d on , Tok yo, and Pa ri s . T h e i n i t i a t i ve is ca lled the Wo rld Cities Project and will document the common characteristics and problems, as well as the differences, related to aging in these cities.
